Extending your study permit is a crucial step to continue your education in Canada and maintain your legal status. The process requires a timely application and careful documentation to ensure a seamless transition between your permits.

When and How to Apply

It is critical to apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current study permit expires. Submitting your application on time provides you with "implied status," allowing you to continue your studies and work (if eligible) under the same conditions until a decision is made on your new application.

Avoid Penalties

Losing your legal status can result in serious consequences, including a ban on future applications and a requirement to leave Canada.

Implied Status

Submitting a complete application on time automatically provides you with "implied status." This allows you to legally continue your studies under the same conditions as your original permit until a decision is made on your new application.

General Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least the duration of the requested extension.

  • You must provide a letter from your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) confirming your continued enrollment and good academic standing.

  • You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses for the extended period of your studies.

  • You must remain legally admissible to Canada, with no changes in your health or criminal record that would affect your admissibility.

Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

A PAL is generally not required if you are extending your study permit to continue in the same program at the same DLI. However, you will need one if you are changing institutions or programs of study.

Medical Exam

A medical exam may be required if you have been living or traveling outside of Canada for more than six consecutive months in a designated country or territory within the last year.

Letter of Explanation:

This is a vital document where you can explain any complexities in your academic history, such as breaks in study or changes in your program.
