Extend Your Stay in Canada

Maintain Your Legal Status

This process is essential to maintain your legal right to stay in the country. A successful application results in a Visitor Record, a new document that specifies your extended stay.

When and How to Apply

The timing of your application is crucial. You must apply before your current legal status expires. Applying before you status expires places you in "maintained status" which allows you to remain in Canada legally while your extension application is being processed.

Visitor Record

This is the document you apply for to extend your stay. It is not a visa and does not grant you the right to re-enter Canada if you leave.

Maintained Status

Submitting your application on time automatically grants you "maintained status." This allows you to legally remain in Canada under the same conditions as your original status while your new application is being processed.

General Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least the duration of the requested extension.

  • You must be able to prove you have the financial means to support yourself for the entire extended period.

  • Prepare all necessary documents, including a completed application form and a letter of explanation detailing the reasons for your extension.

Reason for Extension

You must convince the immigration officer that you have a good reason for extending you stay.

Ties to Your Home Country

Show strong ties to your home country to convince an officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized extended stay.

Admissibility

You must remain legally admissible to Canada with no changes in health or criminal record status.

Single-Entry vs. Multiple-Entry Visas

When you apply for a Canadian visitor visa, you do not choose whether to receive a single-entry or a multiple-entry visa. This decision is made at the discretion of the visa officer.

  • Single-Entry Visa: This visa allows you to enter Canada only once. If you leave the country, you will need a new visa to re-enter.

  • Multiple-Entry Visa: This visa allows you to enter and exit Canada as many times as you want during the validity of your visa.

Work in Canada

This permit grants temporary legal status to work for a designated employer, in a specific position, and at a designated location. In certain situations a foreign national may obtain an open work permit allowing to work with any employer in any occupation.

From Visitor to Immigrant

Canada offers numerous pathways for individuals worldwide to establish permanent residence, contributing to its diverse and thriving society. For skilled workers and professionals, the journey typically funnels through two primary immigration systems, each designed to welcome those who can contribute to the Canadian economy and integrate successfully into its communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most immigration programs designed to attract skilled workers let you include your family in your application for permanent residency in Canada. This includes your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children. Additionally, Canada has separate programs where citizens and permanent residents can sponsor certain close relatives for immigration.

While there's no age limit to apply for economic immigration programs, your age will affect your score.  These programs award points based on various factors like education, language skills, work experience, and even having a job lined up in Canada. People between 25 and 35 get the highest score for age, but don't worry!  If you're outside this range, you can make up for it with strong points in other categories.

If you're an international student wanting to study in Canada, you'll need a study permit. To get one, you must first be accepted by a school approved by the Canadian government (called a designated learning institution). You'll also need to show you have enough money to cover your schooling, living costs, and even the ticket back home.
